Course Structure

Lectures and seminars will be held in the morning and late afternoon so as to leave plenty of time for free discussion, which is an important part of the Erice system. The early afternoons are reserved for private activities, special seminars, working groups, workshops, etc.

Stand-alone capabilities for projecting powerpoint or pdf talks are available at the lecture hall. The presentations should preferentially be uploaded via memory stick. It is also possible to use personal laptops.

The talks will be made available online. There are no longer printed proceedings.

We will have an excursion to the Cloister and the Duomo in Monreale with the largest and perhaps the nicest mosaics and with the tombs of the Normanic kings Roger I and II and William I and II. In Palermo we will visit the Palazzo dei Normani with the Capella Palatina. Those who like may also visit the catacombi of the Convento dei Cappuccini with about 2000 preserved dead persons standing and sitting. It is also a must to visit the Cathedral in Palermo with the tombs of Federico secondo (Frederick II; stupor mundi), Holy Roman Emperor and king of both of Sicilies (1194 to 1250) and his father Henry VI, his mother Constance and his first wife.

COVID-19 protection

As in 2021, we plan to have the 2022 Erice school in presence. There still may be health measures or restrictions, which are difficult to predict at the moment. We will try to keep you informed by announcements at this place and by e-mails to the registered participants.

Participants will be accommodated in rooms with one or two beds, the majority with shower or bath. Local registration and room allocation is upon your arrival on September 16th in the office at "San Rocco", Via Guarnotta 26, Erice, see Map of Erice.

Busses will leave Palermo airport on September 16 in the afternoon. These busses will be arranged according to your arrival information (see below). Transportation from Trapani airport will be arranged as well.

If you arrive on a day other than September 16 you must come to Erice at your own cost. A taxi from Palermo airport costs about 120 to 180 Euros. (Ask for the price!)

Transportation to the airport on September 22 will be organized during your stay in Erice. Transportation on other days is in your own responsibility.

Room Reservation, Arrival and Departure Information

In order to reserve the rooms in Erice and to arrange the transportation from the airport in Palermo or Trapani to Erice, the "Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture" needs your exact arrival and departure information (times and flight numbers, accompanying persons, etc.). To provide this information we ask you to use the following web link, which will be open until August 20, 2022 (deadline).

If you do not fill in the form by August 20, 2022, we will assume that you do not come and cancel your participation.

Please, do not try to make reservations directly at hotels in Erice.

In recent years some participants got phone calls from persons claiming that they are responsible for hotel reservations in Erice and asking them for their credit card number. Please be aware that such calls are fraud! The accommodation is entirely arranged by the local staff of the "Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture" in Erice, based on the data you specified in the arrival and departure information form. They will never approach you directly (neither by phone nor by e-mail) and they will not ask you for your credit card number.

Internet Access

Several personal computers as well as WLAN access are available at the Centro Ettore Majorana.
